The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has been designated by the country’s High Court as a terrorist group.

In a ruling, the court said the activities of the group in any part of Nigeria amounts to acts of terrorism and illegality. The verdict did not specify what the charges against the group were, and based the verdict on evidence without further elaboration. The ruling comes amid growing calls by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria on the government to release their leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. The Muslim cleric and his wife have been languishing behind bars since December 2015 when the Nigerian army unleashed a deadly crackdown on the IMN members. The same court which blacklisted the I-M-N on Saturday ordered the government to release Sheikh Zakzaky in 2016 but the government refused to obey. Family members of the leader say Sheikh Zakzaky could lose his life any time soon if he's not given access to medical treatment immediately.
